Toastmasters Documentary

Visual Design / Videography
Project Overview
Toastmasters is an international organization that mentors people in communication and leadership skills. As part of a Visual Narrative project for 3rd Year Interaction Design, my partner Jake Aiton and I worked together to create a short documentary on the Toastmasters experience through the eyes of one of their accomplished members.
The Process
The documentary would consist of both interview and B-roll shots from one of the club meetings, so filming dates were planned along with questions to ask the interviewee on the day of filming. Storyboards were made to figure out the intended direction of the film. On the day of filming, 3 studio lights, 2 DSLR cameras, and a personal mic system were rented out and set up accordingly so the interview would be properly lit on screen, filmed from 2 angles, and properly heard from the interviewee being mic'd up. The night of B-roll shooting first involved getting the club's permission to film them, followed by 50 B-roll shots taken within the span of 3 hours.
In post production, Adobe Premiere was used to trim and edit the footage into becoming a documentary with a clear narrative, and appropriate royalty-free music was added in the background.
